From Amateur to Pro

A Five-Part Series by Craver

Part 1: Get Your Head On Straight

So you have been practicing, maybe playing out at some open mics and jamming with your friends.  You think you would like to take the leap from amateur to professional musician.  To make this a smooth transition, there are some things you need to know.

Pressure:  When somebody is stroking a check for live-music, they have certain expectations.  These expectations can often cause you stress.  Anticipate possible stress points and take steps to avoid them in advance.

Commitment:  Unlike a casual gig, a paid gig requires commitment.  You must know your material, show up on time and behave in a professional manner.

It Is a Job:  If you are getting paid, it is a job.  It may be a very enjoyable job with great fringe benefits, but it is still a job.  Don’t forget it.

Preparation:  Make sure you prepare for your gigs.  Know your material, check your gear before leaving home, and over communicate with your band members.  Make set lists.  Minimize time between songs and don't 'noodle'!

If you get your head on straight before taking on paid gigs, you will be more successful and you will enjoy the ride.

Craver is a working musician in Atlanta, Georgia with two CDs to his credit..  He also is the founder of Open Mic Entertainment.
